Microsoft revealed that Russian operatives have intensified their efforts to disrupt U.S. politics by targeting Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.

Focusing on Harris' Campaign

According to Clint Watts, General Manager of the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center and Digi24, this shift in tactics highlights a significant change in Russian influence operations in response to the evolving U.S. political landscape.

Over the past two months, Microsoft has observed Russian-affiliated groups focusing on Harris' campaign, using fabricated videos designed to sow discord and spread misinformation.

This shift is a strategic move aimed at exploiting perceived vulnerabilities in new political candidates.

Fake Attack on Trum Rally

Specifically, Microsoft identified two Russian groups, Storm-1516 and Storm-167, which have been disseminating misleading videos.

One video falsely depicted alleged Harris supporters attacking a supposed Trump rally participant, while another featured an actor making fabricated claims about Harris’ involvement in a hit-and-run incident. Additionally, a third video showcased a fake billboard with false claims about Harris’ policies.

This revelation comes in the wake of President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the Democratic primary race in July, following poor debate performances against Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Microsoft noted that initially, Russian influence operations struggled to adapt to Biden’s exit, but they have now redirected their efforts toward Harris.

Moreover, Microsoft has also detected influence activities linked to China, which included videos criticizing both the Biden administration and Harris’ campaign.
