Norwegian police have arrested Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, on suspicion of rape.

The 27-year-old, who is not an official member of the Royal House, was taken into custody late Monday night as part of an ongoing investigation.

Høiby was arrested at 11:12 p.m. local time while in a car with his ex-girlfriend, the complainant in a separate case that led to his initial arrest in August.

According to a police statement, the charges now include violating Article 291b of the Criminal Code, which involves sexual relations with a person unable to resist due to unconsciousness or other incapacitating reasons.

More Accusations

The case against Høiby has expanded since the investigation began in August.

He was initially detained for alleged bodily harm, material damage, and threats related to an incident in his ex-girlfriend’s apartment.

The case now includes accusations involving two other former partners and a third individual.

In August, Høiby reportedly admitted to some charges, citing struggles with alcohol and substance use as well as mental health challenges. Police are determining whether he will remain in custody or face preventive detention while the investigation continues.

The Norwegian Royal House has refrained from commenting extensively on the situation.

Crown Prince Haakon, Høiby’s stepfather, has publicly described the matter as "difficult" and "serious," while Crown Princess Mette-Marit has appealed for understanding.

She has been largely absent from public life in recent weeks due to ongoing treatment for pulmonary fibrosis.

Høiby, born from a prior relationship before Mette-Marit married Haakon in 2001, has no official royal duties. However, he maintains ties with the royal family and occasionally attends family events.
