Ancient Egypt continues to captivate the world with its timeless secrets.
From the grandeur of the pyramids to the intricate hieroglyphs left behind, every new discovery paints a vivid picture of a civilization that flourished thousands of years ago.
Now, archaeologists have unearthed another treasure — a hidden temple in Athribis, near modern-day Sohag, that sheds light on the spiritual and artistic prowess of ancient Egyptians.
The temple, carved into a cliff, is believed to have been dedicated to the lion-headed goddess Repit, according to WP.
Hieroglyphs found within depict King Ptolemy VIII, who reigned between 170 and 116 BCE, making offerings to Repit and her son, Kolanthes.
While the exact name of the temple is still unknown, the intricate carvings suggest its significance in the region’s religious life.
A Hidden Chamber in the Temple
Beneath the temple, a hidden chamber was discovered.
Measuring about six meters long and three meters wide, it once held sacred items and later, amphorae — clay vessels used for storage.
Reliefs at the entrance depict Repit and Min-Ra, accompanied by mythical figures known as decans. These beings, with human bodies and animal heads like a falcon and ibis, are rarely seen in such detail.
Excavations are part of the Athribis Project, which has been exploring this site since 2012.
The temple complex, built between 144 BCE and 138 CE, spans over 30 hectares and includes a settlement, necropolis, and quarries. Researchers have only just begun to unlock the full story of this ancient district.
The discovery offers a glimpse into a sophisticated culture that revered its gods and celebrated artistic expression.
Warm mud from the nearby thermal springs preserved many of the artifacts, allowing archaeologists to uncover them in remarkable condition.
As they dig deeper, researchers hope to uncover more about the daily lives and beliefs of the people who worshipped here.
This site, rich in history, promises to add yet another layer to our understanding of ancient Egypt’s enduring legacy.
