The situation surrounding Luis Rubiales, the embattled president of the Spanish Football Association, has taken a dramatic turn. Reports have emerged that his mother, Angeles Bejar, has initiated a hunger strike in protest against what she perceives as a "manhunt" against her son.
Rubiales has been under fire for kissing Spanish Women's World Cup player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal ceremony, an act that has led to widespread criticism and calls for his resignation.
Rubiales has defended his actions, stating he will not step down, and the Spanish FA even claimed that Hermoso was fine with the kiss. However, Hermoso later released her own statement, saying she felt pressured to say she was fine with the act.
As a result, 81 female players have declared they will not play for Spain until Rubiales is removed from his position. FIFA has since suspended him.
Adding to the drama, Bejar has reportedly locked herself in the Divina Pastora church in Montril, demanding that Hermoso "tell the truth." She plans to remain there until "justice" is served.
Meanwhile, several male players and 11 members of Spain's coaching team have resigned in support of Hermoso.
Rubiales is currently suspended from all football-related activities while disciplinary proceedings are underway.
The Spanish FA has stated that Rubiales will legally defend himself and trusts that the truth will prevail.
