The Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee is preparing to engage in discussions with the American Gymnastics Federation this week regarding the bronze medal won by Ana Maria Bărbosu in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics.

Reaction to Appeal

Mihai Covaliu, the committee's president, announced that this online meeting will primarily address the emotional toll the situation has taken on the athletes involved, while also exploring ways to resolve the ongoing dispute swiftly, according to Ziare.

This controversy erupted after American gymnast Jordan Chiles, who initially secured third place, filed an appeal claiming that her score had been unfairly adjusted. Covaliu stated, “Romania has a bronze medal in gymnastics through Ana Maria Bărbosu,” but emphasized that the matter is far from settled.

The Romanian team successfully contested Chiles' appeal in front of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ruled in their favor on the grounds that Chiles had requested a reevaluation of her score four seconds too late. As a result, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the bronze medal to Bărbosu.

All Parties are Cooperating

In a recent development, Chiles’ legal team has appealed to the Swiss Supreme Court, asserting that they possess video evidence indicating her request was made on time. They also allege a potential conflict of interest involving the judging panel, raising concerns about the fairness of the process.

Covaliu highlighted the Romanian government's strong support for their position, noting the importance of defending both the honor of Bărbosu and the interests of another Romanian gymnast who could have also claimed a medal.

While the discussions this week are expected to be technical in nature, they are crucial for reaching a resolution. Covaliu assured that all parties are cooperating and exchanging information as the case develops.
