Google has launched a new feature called Android Theft Protection.

Released on Android 15

This functionality, integrated into the recently released Android 15, utilizes artificial intelligence to identify suspicious behaviors and prevent unauthorized access to stolen devices. As mobile theft becomes more prevalent, especially in areas where such incidents are common, this innovation promises enhanced security for users.

So how does Android Theft Protection work? The system leverages the phone’s sensors and sophisticated AI algorithms to monitor for movements or actions that may indicate a theft attempt, according to Ziare.

For example, if someone suddenly yanks the phone from a user’s hand or pulls it from a pocket in an unusual manner, the device will automatically lock its screen. This preventative measure is crucial in deterring thieves, as it secures personal data before they can access it.

This advanced technology is particularly designed to address the frequent theft of phones, which is an ongoing issue in regions like South America, where such methods are commonplace.

When the AI detects an aggressive action, the screen locks, and the user must authenticate access using stringent methods like fingerprint scanning.

Remotely Lock Their Device

Moreover, in cases where a user realizes that their phone has been stolen, even if the AI hasn't detected it, they have the option to remotely lock their device. This can be done through another device by entering the phone number and answering a security question.

If a thief attempts to turn off the phone or disconnect it from the internet, an auto-lock feature activates at the first restart of the device. Even factory resets won’t disable Android Theft Protection, as the system requires the original Google account login details.

his feature ensures that a stolen phone remains unusable, thwarting attempts to resell or repurpose the device.

This new security measure is part of an update delivered through Google Play Services, meaning most Android devices will benefit from this theft protection without needing any hardware modifications.

With this rollout, Google aims to make smartphone theft much more difficult, providing peace of mind for millions of users worldwide.
