META's instant messaging service, WhatsApp, recently added four new ways to format messages.
These updates make it easier to construct understandable shopping lists for the store, for instance. At the same time, long messages can be structured in a more readable format.
The new text formatting options are detailed in a WhatsApp support article.
Bullet Points: You can now use bullets, similar to dashes, to list different items, such as a weekend trip checklist or shopping items. This is done with an asterisk followed by a space before the text, i.e., [text]. A dash - and space also works.
Numbered Lists: Lists can also be made in numerical order by typing a number followed by a dot and then a space at the beginning of the message. For example, 1. [text] or 2. [text].
Quotations: You can add a quotation to your message by placing a greater than sign > and a space before it.
Code Markings: A useful addition for programmers, or coders. Messages can now embed code by wrapping the desired snippet in without spaces, i.e.,text`. This way, you can also highlight text other than code, so this trick isn't just for a small circle of users.
According to The Verge, the new formats work on Android, iOS, Mac, and also on WhatsApp Web. Previously available were text bolding, italicizing, strikethrough, and monospaced text.
