Better late than never: IKEA has officially rolled out support for the Matter protocol on its DIRIGERA hub, two years after first announcing the move.
The update allows IKEA's Smart Home devices to seamlessly connect with other systems using Matter, the universal standard for Smart Home devices.
With Matter support, IKEA's DIRIGERA hub acts as a bridge, enabling smart products using the Zigbee protocol to function within a Matter network. This brings IKEA’s Smart Home gadgets in line with a growing number of devices that work effortlessly across different platforms.
Last year, Philips Hue updated its Hue Bridge with Matter compatibility, setting the stage for a more connected future.
Other manufacturers like Aqara have fully embraced Matter, offering devices that don’t need extra hubs or bridges. However, larger players like IKEA and Philips Hue still rely on bridges to ensure cross-platform compatibility.
IKEA’s CEO, Damir Smrkovic, describes the Matter integration as a step towards a smoother Smart Home experience: "Users no longer have to worry about compatibility—everything just works together, simply and efficiently," he explained.
Smart Lamps, Speakers, and More
IKEA’s Smart Home hubs have long supported integration with major players like Apple, Google, and Amazon.
Now, with Matter support, an array of IKEA’s Smart Home devices—ranging from lamps and speakers to air purifiers, remote controls, and sensors—can join the growing network of Matter-enabled products, offering consumers more flexibility and ease of use.
