As renewable energy gains momentum across Europe, companies like Spain's Umbrella Global Energy are accelerating the shift towards sustainability.
Umbrella has now inaugurated its largest solar facility in Spain, located in Alange (Badajoz), as part of an extensive project to expand clean energy capacity in Extremadura.
According to elEconomista, the plant has a photovoltaic capacity of 27 MWp, generating 53,780 MWh of clean energy annually.
This is enough to meet the average electricity needs of more than 15,400 households and will significantly contribute to regional decarbonization efforts.
Expanding the Renewable Energy Network
The Alange plant is the third of five planned solar facilities in Extremadura, where Umbrella’s network will ultimately reach 45 MWp and inject approximately 90,679 MWh of renewable energy into the public grid each year.
Upcoming plants in Hornachos and Villafranca de Barros, expected to be operational by the end of 2025, will join those already active in Alange, Zafra, and Olivenza
This expansion reflects Umbrella’s strategic shift from constructing solar plants to becoming an Independent Power Producer (IPP).
The company aims to play a key role in global energy markets by directly supplying renewable power to wholesale electricity networks.
"This project is a major milestone for both Umbrella and the advancement of renewable energy in the region," said Enrique Selva, CEO of Umbrella Global Energy.
Commitment to Sustainability and Biodiversity
Umbrella's solar plants in Extremadura have been designed with sustainability at their core. The company has preserved the natural soil and vegetation at its sites to prevent environmental degradation.
Measures to protect biodiversity include installing nesting boxes and refuges for reptiles and insects, as well as constructing perches to maintain populations of local birds of prey.
The Alange facility underscores Extremadura’s role as a leader in Spain’s renewable energy transition.
By enhancing access to clean power and supporting ecological protection, projects like these demonstrate how infrastructure and environmental responsibility can coexist.
