Meta to Use Facial Recognition to Combat Celebrity Scams in Ads

Using the image of celebrities to promote products or services has long been an effective marketing strategy.

However, with the rise of technology, scammers have increasingly exploited the likeness of famous individuals to falsely endorse products they have no affiliation with.

Growing Number of Scams

This has led to a growing number of consumers falling victim to scams or purchasing products under the false belief that their favorite celebrity supports them.

The challenge lies in the fact that legitimate advertisements featuring celebrities can be difficult to distinguish from fraudulent ones.

Scammers take advantage of this blurred line, making it harder for consumers to recognize when they're being deceived. Many users unknowingly engage with malicious ads, leading them to websites designed to steal their personal information or money.

To address this growing problem, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced the implementation of facial recognition technology aimed at identifying deceptive ads, according to El Economista.

Facial Recognition Technology to the Rescue

This new tool will help detect when a celebrity's image is being used without their consent. If an ad is suspected of being fraudulent, the system will compare the face in the advertisement with the official profile pictures of celebrities on Facebook and Instagram.

If the system detects a match indicating a scam, the ad will be blocked automatically.

This feature will be optional for celebrities, allowing them to opt in to protect their image. Meta has assured that any data generated from these facial comparisons will be deleted immediately to protect users' privacy.

The technology will also be used to detect fake accounts impersonating celebrities, which are often used in scams such as romance frauds, where cybercriminals deceive individuals into sending money or engaging with fraudulent content.

By combining facial recognition with their current automated ad review systems, Meta aims to significantly reduce the number of scam ads using celebrity endorsements.

As millions of ads are posted on Meta platforms daily, this technology will be a critical tool in safeguarding both celebrities' identities and consumers from falling prey to online fraud.
