Google’s Pixel 4a has become a costly headache for the tech giant after a recent software update caused unexpected battery issues for many users.
Starting January 8, 2025, Pixel 4a devices began receiving an automatic update aimed at stabilizing battery performance. While the update works as intended on other models, it has caused problems for the Pixel 4a.
Owners report reduced battery capacity and slower charging speeds, making the phone less reliable for daily use, according to Giga.
Google Offers Compensation
To address the issue, Google is offering affected Pixel 4a users three compensation options:
Free battery replacement at authorized service centers.
$50 direct payment (or the equivalent in local currency).
A $100 discount code for new Google hardware purchases.
Pixel 4a owners can determine if their device is eligible by visiting a dedicated page on Google’s website, where detailed instructions for claiming compensation are available.
Users must act quickly, as claims must be submitted by January 8, 2026, and the offer applies only to devices purchased before January 6, 2025.
Comparisons to "Batterygate"
This situation recalls Apple’s infamous "Batterygate" scandal, where older iPhones had their performance secretly throttled to manage aging batteries.
But Google is taking a different approach, choosing to be transparent about the issue and proactively offering compensation.
