The Russian government is set to restrict cryptocurrency mining in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, such as Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, starting December 1, 2024, citing efforts to address energy shortages, Kommersant reported on November 15.

The restrictions, which could remain in place until 2031 in some areas, will target both industrial and domestic mining activities in regions facing severe energy deficits.

In areas like Irkutsk, Buryatia, and Zabaykalsky Krai, mining will be prohibited during winter peaks from November 15 to March 15 annually, also extending until 2031. A stricter total ban will apply to Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, and Dagestan.

This comes as part of a broader legislative agenda in Russia.

Recently, the State Duma passed laws banning the adoption of Russian children by citizens from countries that permit “gender transition” and prohibiting the “promotion of refusal to have children.”
