Samsung is shaking up the smartphone industry by introducing a subscription-based model for its Galaxy phones.
Launching in February 2025, the initiative will allow customers to rent smartphones instead of purchasing them outright.
The program, dubbed the "AI Subscription Club," will initially roll out in the United States and South Korea.
This subscription model focuses on Samsung's AI-powered Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Subscribers are expected to receive access to advanced artificial intelligence features, regular updates, and maintenance as part of the package.
At CES 2025, Han Jong-hee, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, described the program as a way to make cutting-edge technology more accessible.
“The subscription aims to lower the barrier for users to experience the latest innovations without requiring a full upfront payment,” Han explained to Giga.
The subscription concept builds on Samsung's success in South Korea, where similar models have been used for appliances like refrigerators and washing machines.
Will It Come to Europe?
While the subscription is initially available only in select markets, Samsung hinted at potential expansion into Europe.
However, pricing will be a critical factor, as third-party providers already offer similar rental services.
For users, the subscription offers a chance to access Samsung's latest AI-powered features without a hefty one-time expense. However, long-term subscribers may end up paying more than the retail price of owning the device.
