Samsung is gradually phasing out LED backlights in its TVs.

Samsung is reportedly stepping back from producing LED backlights for its popular QLED TVs.

According to industry sources, production is set to gradually phase out by 2030 as Samsung shifts its focus toward advanced screen technologies like OLED and micro-LED.

Starting in the second half of 2026, Samsung will no longer make backlights for its LCD-based models, such as QLED and Neo QLED.

This means future models will rely on external suppliers for backlighting, primarily from Chinese manufacturers like TCL and BOE.

Samsung began its shift toward OLED technology in 2022 with the launch of QD-OLED. Going forward, their LCD models won’t include Samsung-made display panels or backlighting, as Flatpanels reports.

Although Samsung is moving away from LED backlights, it continues to invest in micro-LED technology. Micro-LED displays don’t require LCD panels because each micro-LED acts as an individual sub-pixel, delivering superior image quality and better energy efficiency.

Samsung already offers micro-LED TVs to both private and commercial customers, though the high prices keep the technology exclusive for now.
