This antivirus does exactly the opposite of what it should do.

Trending Now

When you install antivirus software, the last thing you expect is for it to be the very threat you’re trying to avoid.

But a growing number of users are falling victim to a disturbing new scam: an "antivirus" program that actually infects your device with malicious software.

A Trojan Horse

This scam starts like any other attempt to safeguard your computer or smartphone from malware.

But instead of providing protection, the software functions as a Trojan horse, breaching your system’s defenses and opening the door to viruses.

The consequences can be severe, ranging from data breaches to completely disabling your device.

The Consumer Council is now warning about the growing trend of cybercriminals impersonating reputable companies such as PayPal and Disney+.

They send phishing emails designed to trick users into believing their accounts have been compromised. These emails then recommend downloading an antivirus solution as a fix.

But the warning is clear: this antivirus gives you viruses.

If you follow the instructions in these emails, you won't download protection but a dangerous virus, according to Inside-Digital.

A New Kind of Cybercrime

One of the more frightening trends is that the fake antivirus software is often presented as a quick fix to a serious problem, making it particularly convincing.

Cybercriminals have become experts at creating emails that look like official announcements from well-known companies.

They use fear and time pressure as tools to get victims to act quickly and install the malicious software.

A user who was fooled by a fake antivirus said, "I thought I was securing my computer, but in reality, I opened the door to a virus that rendered my device useless."
