Spotify has accused Apple of violating European digital market regulations by restricting access to volume control features on iPhones.

No Longer Adjust Volume

The issue surfaced after Apple suspended a functionality that allowed users to control the volume of connected devices using the physical buttons on iPhones.

This change directly impacts users of Spotify Connect on iOS, as well as those using the Sonos app, according to Ziare.

As of September 3rd, iPhone users can no longer adjust the volume of connected devices using the phone's physical side buttons. Instead, they must use a volume slider within the Spotify Connect app.

However, this restriction does not apply to Bluetooth or AirPlay sessions on iOS.

No Agreement has been Reached

Spotify argues that Apple’s actions may violate the Digital Markets Act, which mandates that "gatekeepers" must ensure free access and interoperability for all service providers.

The Swedish company claims that Apple is preventing users and alternative service providers from accessing the same hardware and software functionalities that Apple Music enjoys on iOS.

Despite attempts by Spotify to collaborate with Apple to develop a similar solution to those available on Apple TV or HomePod, no agreement has been reached.

Currently, Spotify cannot use the same volume control technology on iPhones as Apple Music, sparking concerns over fair competition and user accessibility.
