Technology continues to evolve, keeping us more connected than ever. While many smartphone features can be distractions while driving, Apple has developed a tool that could be lifesaving in the event of an accident.
This function automatically alerts emergency services and your chosen contacts, reducing response time and increasing the chances of timely assistance.
How Apple's Crash Detection Works
The feature is available on the iPhone 14 and later models, as well as the Apple Watch Series 8 and newer versions. These devices use built-in sensors to detect severe car or motorcycle crashes, including frontal, side, rear-end collisions, and rollovers.
If a crash is detected, the device will display an alert on the screen, accompanied by an alarm. The message "Emergency Call – SOS" will appear, giving the user the option to manually call emergency services or dismiss the alert.
If there is no response within 20 seconds, the call is made automatically.
According to elEconomista, if emergency contacts are set up, they will also receive a notification with the device’s location, helping them reach the user as quickly as possible.
If the phone has medical information stored, it will be shared with first responders for better assistance.
How to Set Up Emergency Contacts
To add emergency contacts, open the Phone app, select a contact, and choose "Add to Emergency Contacts." You will then be prompted to specify your relationship with that person. Once added, these contacts will automatically receive alerts if an accident occurs.
Users can ensure the feature is enabled by going to Settings, selecting "Emergency SOS," and confirming that "Call After a Severe Crash" is turned on.
Additionally, Apple devices allow users to call emergency services manually by pressing the side button five times in quick succession or by holding it down and releasing it.
With these safety features, Apple aims to improve emergency response times and provide peace of mind for drivers and their families.
