Howard Kirby from Owosso, Michigan, was left stunned when he found out why his new sofa was so uncomfortable to sit on.
Kirby, an elderly man, enjoys shopping at thrift stores and had purchased the sofa from a Habitat for Humanity ReStore for around $75 back in 2019.
However, it didn't take long for him and his daughter to realize that the sofa was far from comfortable.
The Shocking Discovery
The reason for the discomfort left both of them speechless. Hidden under one of the sofa cushions was a box, and inside the box was a staggering amount of money—nearly $45,000.
Despite the fact that Kirby's house was in dire need of repairs, he chose to do the right thing. He contacted the store where he had bought the sofa and obtained information about the previous owner.
The rightful owner of the money, Kim Newberry, was extremely surprised when he got his money back.
Newberry offered to repair the roof of Kirby's house, but Kirby kindly declined the offer. Habitat for Humanity and a local builder had already made plans to give Kirby a new roof in return for his generosity. As the story spread, close friends of Howard Kirby started a GoFundMe campaign, which helped raise around $15,000 for him.
