Belgium is preparing to donate three Caesar self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine, according to a report by Belgian media outlet RTBF.

The Ministry of Defense has proposed allocating €12 million ($13,4 million) to acquire and transfer these artillery systems as part of an ongoing effort to support Ukraine’s military capabilities.

The proposal, expected to be presented to the Belgian Council of Ministers soon, is part of the broader Artillery Coalition formed earlier this year by France and the United States.

This coalition includes 25 nations, with the goal of providing Ukraine with 72 additional Caesar howitzers by 2024.

France has already committed to sending 12 systems, with Belgium set to contribute three. The coalition is seen as a key initiative to assist Ukraine’s transition from Soviet-era artillery to modern Western systems, addressing Ukraine's pressing need for more advanced weaponry.

The Artillery Coalition also comes amidst ongoing challenges in securing sufficient ammunition for Western equipment.

France's commitment to this coalition follows an announcement by President Emmanuel Macron that Paris will supply Ukraine with around 40 SCALP long-range cruise missiles and "several hundred" bombs, further bolstering Ukraine's military arsenal.

In addition, Luxembourg has also joined the effort, pledging to supply one Caesar 155mm howitzer to Ukraine this year.
