Ukraine is using Mi-8 helicopters to combat Russian drones, a tactic that reflects both creativity and resourcefulness. This unconventional method also helps to conserve costly Western-supplied anti-aircraft missiles, which are typically reserved for more significant threats, according to Tech.
Machine Gun Mounted on Aircraft
The Mi-8, a versatile helicopter with a history dating back to the 1960s, remains a common sight in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Both sides employ these helicopters, primarily for transporting troops and evacuating civilians.
However, the Mi-8 is now playing a critical role in direct combat missions, particularly in Ukraine's fight against Russian drones.
Recently, a video surfaced on social media showing the crew of a Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter successfully engaging a Russian drone using a machine gun mounted on the aircraft.
This tactic is reminiscent of strategies from World War II, where helicopters equipped with machine guns were used to protect bombers from enemy fighters.
Exploring Different Alternatives
Ukraine has been exploring alternatives to using advanced air defense systems like the Patriot to counter the overwhelming number of Russian drones. Firing expensive missiles at drones is not only economically unfeasible but sometimes ineffective due to the sheer volume of drone attacks.
Experts suggest that systems like the VAMPIR, which uses modified 70mm Hydra rockets equipped with guidance systems, are among the most effective against Russian drones such as the Shahed-136 and Shahed-131.
Additionally, Germany's Gepard systems, armed with dual 35mm automatic cannons, have also proven effective in shooting down Iranian-made drones used by Russia.
While instances of using Mi-8 helicopters or training aircraft like the Yak-52 for drone defense are rare, they highlight Ukraine's adaptability in this ongoing conflict.
