Italy has confirmed the delivery of a second SAMP/T air and missile defense system to Ukraine, aimed at enhancing the country’s defenses against Russian aggression.

Most Advanced Air Defense Worldwide

This system, which is expected to arrive shortly after being stationed in Kuwait, represents a significant boost for Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

The SAMP/T, a collaborative project between France and Italy, has been operational since 2011 and is recognized as one of the most advanced air defense systems worldwide, according to WP.

It is designed to intercept a variety of aerial threats, including Russia's Iskander-M ballistic missiles. As Ukraine continues to face an escalating barrage of missile strikes, the arrival of this system is both timely and crucial.

360-Degree Radar

The system utilizes Aster missiles, which were originally developed for naval defense. The ground-based SAMP/T variant can launch eight missiles from a single unit, making it a versatile and powerful tool for air defense.

Compared to the U.S. Patriot system, the SAMP/T is more compact, allowing for easier transport and deployment. It requires only 14 personnel to operate, streamlining the logistical aspects of its use.

One of the SAMP/T's standout features is its radar, which can detect targets across a full 360-degree range. This is a significant advantage over the Patriot system, which requires multiple radars to achieve similar coverage.

However, while the radar's detection range is approximately 100 kilometers (about 62 miles), recent updates have enhanced capabilities, allowing for detection ranges of up to 400 kilometers (approximately 248 miles).
