The Bayraktar TB2 drones, once a critical tool for Ukraine in its defense against Russia, have continued to play a role in striking Russian targets despite new challenges.
Famous Early in War
Early in the war, these Turkish-made drones became famous for their precision in targeting Russian forces, but as the conflict progressed, Russia developed more effective countermeasures, leading to a reduction in the number of drone strikes.
Initially, the Bayraktar TB2 drones were instrumental in Kyiv's defense, known for bombing Russian military targets during the early stages of the war.
These medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) drones can fly up to 7.6 km (25,000 feet) and cover distances of up to 300 km (186 miles) depending on the transmitter type, according to WP.
With a payload capacity of up to 150 kg (330 pounds), these drones carry a variety of bombs, including the Turkish MAM-C and MAM-L guided munitions.
Still Used in Certain Operations
Though the frequency of drone strikes has decreased due to Russian advancements in counter-drone technologies, the TB2s are still being used in certain operations when opportunities arise.
For example, a recent strike showed a Bayraktar dropping bombs on a Russian Mi-8/17 helicopter unloading troops, demonstrating their continued effectiveness when used strategically.
The TB2 drones are equipped with advanced targeting systems, including a thermal camera and laser-guided bombs, allowing them to strike both infantry and light-armored vehicles. With a flight time of 27 hours, these drones remain a valuable asset for Ukraine, especially in areas with weaker Russian air defenses.
