Brazil, which previously declined to support Ukraine with armored transporters, is now looking to strengthen its defense capabilities through a new deal with Russia.
Produced in Collaboration with Russia
According to Tech the shift comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and highlights Brazil's evolving defense strategy.
In the past, Brazil rejected Ukraine's offer to purchase 450 Guarani 6x6 armored personnel carriers. Despite Ukraine's assurances that the vehicles would be used solely for humanitarian purposes, Brazil's reluctance was attributed to maintaining favorable trade relations with Moscow.
This decision underscored Brazil’s cautious approach in navigating its international relations, particularly with Russia.
However, recent developments indicate a significant shift in Brazil's defense procurement strategy. According to reports from Ukrainian news portal Defense Express, Brazil is now interested in acquiring copies of Russian P-800 Oniks missiles.
These missiles, known for their advanced capabilities, are produced in India under a collaborative agreement with Russia. The Indian version of the missile, named BrahMos, is designed to bypass international sanctions imposed on Russia.
Finalized in September
The BrahMos missile is a supersonic cruise missile that can target both naval and land-based threats. Measuring nearly 9 meters in length and weighing about 3 tons, it boasts a top speed of Mach 2.8 (over 3,400 km/h) and has a range of up to 290 kilometers.
The missile’s sophisticated guidance system combines inertial, radar, and active-passive technologies to ensure precise targeting.
Brazil and India are set to finalize details by the end of September regarding mutual defense projects and arms sales. The Brazilian delegation's visit to India will focus on discussing the procurement of BrahMos missiles, marking a notable pivot in Brazil’s defense policy.
