The United Kingdom has officially confirmed the donation of a new batch of AS90 self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine.

Father of the Polish Krab

Known for enhancing artillery capabilities, the AS90 is often referred to as the "father" of the Polish Krab. The AS90 howitzer is referred to as the "father" of the Polish Krab because the Krab artillery system is heavily based on the design and technology of the AS90.

This delivery represents a key commitment from Britain as it continues to support Ukraine during ongoing conflicts, according to WP.

So far, the UK has supplied over 60 AS90 howitzers, and if the new delivery matches this quantity, it could mean that Britain is preparing to provide nearly its entire AS90 inventory, leaving only 14 units stationed in Estonia for service or storage.

Six Rounds Per Minute

This transfer could leave the UK with limited artillery resources until it acquires the RCH 155 systems. Currently, the only available artillery will consist of 14 FH77BW Archer howitzers obtained from Sweden.

While this may seem like a drastic reduction in military capacity, it is considered practical since the AS90 is no longer in production, including critical components like barrels. In this context, the howitzers are likely to serve better on the front lines in Ukraine.

The AS90 self-propelled howitzer entered service with the British Army in 1992, replacing older systems such as the FV433 Abbot and M109.

Although discussions about modernizing the AS90 with longer barrels were made, these plans were not pursued. Nevertheless, the upgraded turret design was utilized by Poland in developing the Krab howitzer.

Despite its limitations, the AS90 remains a modern self-propelled howitzer, built on a tracked chassis weighing 45 tons.

It can quickly occupy and vacate firing positions in under a minute, boasting a firing rate of six rounds per minute. Additionally, the AS90 can execute a triple-shot volley in just ten seconds, enhancing its effectiveness on the battlefield.
