Canada has delivered a NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) to Ukraine. The announcement was made by Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair at the Halifax International Security Forum.
The system is intended to protect critical infrastructure and urban areas from Russian air attacks, according to WP.
NASAMS is known for its ability to counter drones, aircraft, and missiles. It uses short- and medium-range missiles, providing flexible protection against a variety of aerial threats.
The system was purchased from the United States for 406 million Canadian dollars (approximately $300 million USD).
Thanked U.S. And Norway
Canada placed the order two years ago and has since supported Ukraine with over 300 air defense missiles.
Minister Blair expressed gratitude to the United States and Norway for their assistance in transporting the system. He said NASAMS would be crucial in defending Ukrainian cities and infrastructure from destructive airstrikes.
The need for advanced air defenses has grown as Russia continues targeting Ukraine’s infrastructure with aerial assaults. NASAMS’s proven capabilities make it a significant addition to Ukraine’s arsenal.
The system is used by several NATO countries and is known for its effectiveness in defending against modern air threats.
Canada’s contribution reflects its ongoing support for Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
In addition to military aid, Canada has provided financial assistance and diplomatic backing to Ukraine’s efforts to protect its sovereignty.
The delivery of NASAMS is part of a broader international effort to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses.
This delivery comes at a critical time for Ukraine. The NASAMS system is expected to improve the country’s ability to defend itself against increasingly sophisticated Russian attacks.
It also symbolizes the continued commitment of Ukraine’s allies to provide advanced military technology in support of its defense efforts.
