Ukraine recently inflicted significant damage on Russian military assets by striking the Olenya airbase, located 1,800 km from the frontline.

A Cornerstone of Russia's Strategic Bomber Fleet

This attack, initially believed to have impacted one Tu-22M3 strategic bomber, was later confirmed to have damaged two of these formidable aircraft.

According to a representative from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate, the repairs required to bring these bombers back to operational status could take several months, representing a considerable setback for Russia.

According to Tech the Tu-22M3 bombers are a cornerstone of Russia's strategic bomber fleet, and their loss is significant for several reasons. These bombers can carry up to 24 tons of various munitions, including hypersonic Kinzhal missiles and supersonic Kh-22 cruise missiles.

Such armament allows them to conduct highly destructive strikes on critical infrastructure and fortified positions within Ukraine, making them a key asset in Russia's military strategy. Before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia's fleet included approximately 60 Tu-22M3 bombers, with operational readiness likely limited to around half that number. The loss of two aircraft thus represents a substantial reduction in available offensive capabilities.

Ukrainian Forces are Extending Their Operational Reach

One of the critical advantages of the Tu-22M3 is its speed and range. The bombers can travel at speeds up to Mach 1.9 (about 2,321 km/h) and operate at altitudes of around 13 kilometers.

These features allow them to launch attacks while remaining out of reach of most air defense systems, with only advanced systems like the Patriot or SAMP/T capable of posing a threat. However, these systems are limited in number within the Ukrainian arsenal, which makes the recent strike on the Olenya base even more impressive.

The operational range of the Tu-22M3, approximately 7,000 kilometers, enables them to conduct missions from deep within Russian territory, complicating efforts to counter them on the ground. This capability has been a significant advantage for Russia, as it allows these bombers to strike targets far from the frontlines, where Ukrainian defenses are strongest.

The recent damage to these bombers indicates that Ukrainian forces are extending their operational reach, capable of targeting strategic assets well beyond the immediate conflict zone.
