An EU country announced that a drone likely entered its airspace on Monday morning amid an intense wave of Russian bombardments on Ukraine.
A Search Operation is Undergoing
According to digi24 the drone landed within the polish territory, prompting a search operation. This incident comes as tensions remain high following a previous episode in 2022, when a stray Ukrainian missile struck the village of Przewodow, killing two people.
During Monday’s attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia launched over 100 missiles and approximately 100 drones targeting 15 regions across Ukraine. The heavy bombardment affected civilian areas and infrastructure, escalating concerns in neighboring countries.
A spokesperson for the polish operational command indicated that the object was most likely a drone.
It Was Not a Missile
“The flight trajectory and speed suggest it was not a missile,” said Jacek Goryszewski, the spokesperson. However, due to poor weather conditions, it was impossible to visually identify the drone or determine whether it was of Russian or Ukrainian origin.
The drone entered the country’s airspace at 04:43 GMT near the Ukrainian city of Chervonohrad. Radar tracking was lost at 05:00 GMT, and there were no reported explosions. Goryszewski added that the drone may have exited the country’s airspace, but military aircraft had been on alert and prepared to intercept the object if necessary.
This incident follows a series of airspace violations. In December 2023, a Russian missile reportedly entered the country’s airspace, and in April, a military object, later identified as a Russian missile, was found in a forest near the northern city of Bydgoszcz.
