Ukraine’s Role Is Key to Europe’s Defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a stark warning to Europe, emphasizing that the continent stands no chance against Russian aggression without Ukraine’s military efforts, according to Politico.
Speaking to Polish media outlet Onet, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine’s victory is essential to halting the Kremlin’s broader expansionist ambitions.
“Europe without the Ukrainian army will not cope with the Russian army because it is larger in terms of numbers,” he said, citing Russia’s superior manpower and arsenal.
He added, “Without the Ukrainian army, Europe unfortunately has no chance against Russia today. Putin knows this and talks about it in his circle.”
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has endured staggering losses—over 43,000 soldiers killed and 370,000 wounded.
However, Kyiv’s forces remain resolute, boasting nearly one million troops, the largest standing army in Europe aside from Russia’s.
The West Underestimates Putin’s Intentions
Zelenskyy expressed frustration with some Western countries, which he believes fail to grasp the scale of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions.
In contrast, nations closer to Russia—such as the Nordic countries, Baltics, Poland, and Romania—have long understood the threat.
“They [the West] do not want to recognize one truth about the Russians: They will go further. Period,” Zelenskyy stated.
He urged Ukraine’s allies to bolster their own defenses while supplying Kyiv with vital support to prevent further Russian advances.
Challenges Ahead as U.S. Leadership Changes
Zelenskyy’s remarks come amid uncertainty about U.S. policy as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office on January 20.
During his campaign, Trump signaled intentions to cut aid to Ukraine and hinted at resolving the war through negotiation—an approach Kyiv opposes unless Russia relinquishes claims on occupied territories.
