Russia’s stock of tanks may run dangerously low by 2025, according to Oleksandr Musienko, head of Ukraine's Center for Military and Legal Research.

Outdated Tanks

Musienko predicts that the Russian Federation’s tank reserves are rapidly depleting, and the country could face severe shortages within the next two years.

Although Russian forces still have access to older models like the T-55 and T-62, these outdated tanks are increasingly vulnerable on the modern battlefield and offer limited strategic value according to WP.

This assessment is consistent with earlier predictions from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which estimated that Russia’s tank supplies could last until 2026.

Empty Stockpiles

Despite these challenges, experts from the ISW believe that Russia will manage to maintain some level of production. However, Musienko emphasizes that Russia’s tank reserve situation will worsen more rapidly, particularly as these older tanks continue to be lost in combat.

The T-90M Proryv, Russia’s most modern tank, remains a critical focus for production, with plans to produce 149 units by the end of 2024. This advanced tank is seen as a key weapon in Russia’s military arsenal.

Equipped with a 125mm gun and advanced fire-control systems, the T-90M is designed to excel in offensive operations. However, the tank’s performance has sometimes fallen short against Western combat vehicles like the M2 Bradley, raising questions about its overall effectiveness.

Musienko also warns that by 2026, Russia may face an empty stockpile, lacking the tanks needed to sustain its military efforts.
