Finnish President Alexander Stubb believes that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine could be resolved with a single phone call.

According to Lenta Stubb believes that if Chinese President Xi Jinping were to call Russian President Vladimir Putin and urge for peace talks, it could bring an end to the hostilities.

Significant Influence

Stubb highlighted China's significant influence over Russia, suggesting that Russia is economically and strategically dependent on China.

"One phone call from Xi Jinping could resolve this crisis," Stubb stated, emphasizing the potential power China holds in mediating the conflict.

He pointed out that Ukraine's allies are frustrated with the support China appears to be giving Russia, which includes providing technology and parts for weaponry and helping Moscow circumvent international trade restrictions.

"If Xi Jinping were to say it’s time to start peace negotiations, Russia would have no choice but to comply," Stubb asserted, underscoring the leverage China has over Russia.

Call for Increased Support to Ukraine

In addition to urging China to intervene, Stubb called for increased material and political support for Ukraine. He believes that stronger backing from the international community is crucial for Ukraine's defense and resilience against Russian aggression.

Stubb's appeal echoes sentiments from other European leaders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also urged China to use its influence over Russia to help end the conflict. She suggested that China should leverage its significant diplomatic power to push for peace.

China's Response and Russia's Stance

As of now, there has been no official response from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Stubb's statements.

In the past, Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed claims about Russia's dependence on China. He argued that Europe's economic dependence on China is growing at a much faster rate than Russia's. Putin also refuted assertions that Moscow is forming a military alliance with Beijing, which could pose a threat to other nations.

In June, during a conference in Switzerland, Stubb reiterated his belief that China could play a key role in resolving the Ukraine conflict.

He called on Beijing to exert its influence over Moscow for the sake of global stability. The international community, particularly Ukraine's allies, continues to watch closely, hoping for a diplomatic breakthrough that could lead to peace in the region.
