As the war in Ukraine enters its third year, European leaders are growing increasingly concerned about the future of Western support.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has directly warned former U.S. President Donald Trump that a Russian victory would not only threaten Europe but also weaken the United States on the global stage.
"If Putin Wins, the U.S. Loses"
Speaking at an event in Kyiv commemorating three years since Russia’s invasion, Stubb emphasized that Ukraine’s struggle extends beyond its own borders.
“The war in Ukraine is not just about its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity—it’s about European security and American leadership,” Stubb said, as reported by Digi24.
When asked what message he had for Trump, Stubb was clear: “If there is even a hint or suspicion that Putin is winning now, then the United States will have lost. So I believe we must fight until the end.”
Finland’s Strategic Role in NATO
Finland, which joined NATO in 2023 after decades of neutrality, has significantly bolstered the alliance’s presence on Russia’s border.
Stubb noted that Finland is not just a beneficiary of NATO’s protection but a key contributor to European defense.
“We have just doubled NATO’s border with Russia.
We have one of the largest armies in Europe. We have always maintained high defense spending, and the reason is obvious—it’s not Stockholm, it’s Moscow,” Stubb stated.
Growing European Concerns
Stubb’s remarks come at a time when Ukraine’s relationship with the U.S., its largest military supporter, is under strain.
With Trump potentially returning to power, European leaders fear a shift in American policy that could reduce aid to Ukraine and embolden Russia.
As the war continues, Stubb’s message underscores Europe’s stance: Ukraine’s fight is a fight for the West, and any sign of weakness could have lasting consequences for global security.
