The war in Ukraine has drawn global attention, not only for its devastating toll but also for the international response it has galvanized.

Volunteers from across the world have taken up arms to support Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.

Now, the formation of an international legion signals a new chapter in this effort, with Poland emerging as a key training ground, according to Digi24.

Signing Contracts In January

The first unit of the Ukrainian Legion, trained in Poland, has officially departed for Ukraine, according to Vasil Bodnar, Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland.

In an interview with Radio Free Europe, Bodnar confirmed that these volunteers are now set to continue their preparation on Ukrainian training grounds.

More recruits are already in the pipeline. On January 10, the next group of volunteers will sign contracts with Ukraine’s armed forces and proceed to Polish training facilities.

Ambassador Bodnar emphasized the importance of this initiative, calling it a “success story” despite attempts by Russian propaganda to discredit it.

“We’d prefer the process to move faster, but it’s progressing steadily,” he said. Bodnar also highlighted efforts to publicize the initiative across EU nations and beyond, to attract more support.

The Ukrainian Legion has already garnered significant interest. By November, over 500 applications had been received from volunteers hailing from 30 different countries.

While specific numbers remain undisclosed, this reflects a growing global commitment to Ukraine’s cause.

Polish officials have acknowledged their role in supporting the legion.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz previously stated that Poland is prepared to provide training for Ukraine’s recruits once sufficient personnel are gathered.
