The war in Ukraine has lasted for more than two years. It has reshaped military strategies, political alliances, and security policies.

Western nations have supplied Ukraine with financial and military aid, while Russia has strengthened ties with its own allies.

As discussions about a potential ceasefire continue, some leaders believe negotiations could bring an end to the conflict.

Others warn that any agreement will require security guarantees to prevent future aggression. The question now is what role Western countries might play in ensuring stability if a ceasefire is reached.

A Military Presence

According to The Daily Telegraph, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have discussed possible scenarios for Western military support in Ukraine.

Lithuania has also indicated a willingness to send troops if Kyiv makes such a request.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys said in an interview with LRT television that Vilnius would consider deploying forces alongside its allies in the future.

The future U.S. administration has expressed support for the idea of European forces in Ukraine.

Two advisers to President-elect Donald Trump told Reuters that a resolution to the war should be expected within several months.

Trump’s envoy for Russia and Ukraine, retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, told Fox News that he hopes to find a solution within 100 days.

Discussions about a ceasefire include proposals for concessions from both Ukraine and Russia.

Senator Marco Rubio, nominated for U.S. Secretary of State, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that ending the war would require difficult negotiations.

"There will have to be concessions from the Russian Federation, but also from the Ukrainians," Rubio said. He warned that Putin may try to impose neutrality on Ukraine, rebuild, and attack again in the future.

France appears to be leading efforts to plan a European military presence in Ukraine.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Macron has shared his ideas with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to Intelligence Online, French special forces have already conducted exercises simulating intervention in Ukraine. The exercises focused on drone warfare, electronic systems, and logistics.
