French Mirage 2000-5 Jets to be Upgraded for Ground Attack Role Before Delivery to Ukraine

French Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets, which are set to be transferred to Ukraine, will undergo modifications to enhance their ground attack capabilities, according to Sud-Ouest on September 18.

The modifications will be carried out at the Cazaux air base, where the jets are being prepared for their new role.

The Mirage 2000 is a versatile multirole fighter developed in the late 1970s and introduced in 1984.

The 2000-5 variant, which boasts advanced radar systems and increased range due to additional fuel drop tanks, is a fourth-generation aircraft comparable to the U.S. F-16.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on June 6 that France would provide an unspecified number of these Mirage 2000-5 jets to Ukraine, although no specific timeline was given.

Macron also revealed plans to train Ukrainian pilots in France as part of the cooperation agreement.

The upgrades will ensure that the Mirage 2000-5 jets can effectively engage ground targets, enhancing their utility for the Ukrainian military.

This move is part of France's broader support for Ukraine, which includes military aid and training for its forces.
