Iran is reportedly hosting secret negotiations between Russia and Yemen's Houthi movement to discuss the possible transfer of Russian supersonic anti-ship missiles, according to a Reuters report that cites several unnamed sources.

The talks are focused on Russia potentially supplying Yakhont missiles (P-800 Oniks), a powerful weapon that could pose a serious threat to U.S. and European warships protecting trade routes in the Red Sea.

While no decision has been made, two meetings were held in Tehran this year, and discussions are expected to continue.

Growing Threats in the Red Sea

Tensions in the Red Sea are escalating as Houthi forces have begun targeting commercial vessels in response to Israel's invasion of Gaza.

Since November, the Houthis have reportedly sunk two ships and seized another, prompting global shipping companies to alter their routes.

If Russia provides the Yakhont missiles, it would boost the Houthis' military power. These P-800 Oniks missiles are known for their speed and range, and could create new challenges for Western naval forces that secure the region’s vital shipping lanes.

Previous Russian Missile Transfers

Russia has previously supplied Yakhont missiles to Iran-backed Hezbollah, which increased risks for the U.S. Navy in the Middle East. If Russia sends these missiles to the Houthis, it could further raise security concerns for international trade routes.

Recently, Houthi forces also attacked a tanker carrying Russian oil in the Red Sea, adding more tension to the region.
