New Airship-Based Defense System Developed in St. Petersburg

According to the Russian media a new defense system was developed in St. Petersburg, Russia.

According to ABNews a new defense system named "Barrier," designed to protect facilities from unmanned aerial vehicles, has been developed in the Russian Federation.

Inspired by WWI

The media repports that this innovative system utilizes a network of airships hovering above the protected area, and each airship in the "Barrier" system is capable of supporting up to 30 kg of payload.

The development was announced by Polina Albek, CEO of the development company AO "First Dirigible," during the "Technologies for Detection and Counteraction Against UAVs" conference held in St. Petersburg.

Albek noted that the inspiration for creating the "Barrier" system came from the historical use of airships in defense during World War I, where they were outfitted with chain cables.

A Step Forward

AO "First Dirigible," primarily known for manufacturing cargo airships, has leveraged its expertise in this field to create the "Barrier" system. According to RIA Novosti, the company manufactures the airships directly, while the networks are produced by specialized enterprises.

It has earlier been reported that there were several proposals to use similar airships for transport of Kuzbass coal.

The development of the "Barrier" system represents a significant step forward in the field of defense against UAVs, showcasing Russia's commitment to leveraging historical technologies for modern security challenges.
