Renewed Hostilities
Israel resumed airstrikes on Gaza on March 18, 2025, in response to what it described as Hamas's refusal to free remaining hostages. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, over 300 people have been killed, including at least 50 children and 28 women, while more than 250 others have been wounded.
The Israeli military confirmed the strikes, stating they targeted Hamas infrastructure and militant operatives. This marks the most intense assault on Gaza since the ceasefire agreement took effect in January, which had momentarily halted the violence. The recent attacks come amid deadlocked negotiations over extending the ceasefire, as reported by Digi24.
Evacuations and Humanitarian Impact
In light of the escalation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued evacuation orders for civilians in multiple areas, including Beit Hanoun, Khuza'a, and Abasan al-Kabira. Residents have been urged to relocate to shelters in western Gaza City and Khan Younis immediately.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen. Local hospitals, already crippled by months of conflict, are struggling to cope with the surge in casualties. Reports indicate that many of the wounded are in critical condition, and medical facilities lack essential supplies.
The Palestinian Red Crescent reported handling at least 86 fatalities and 134 injuries, while additional victims have been transported to hospitals via private vehicles.
Political and International Reactions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the military operation, stating that "Israel will act with increasing force against Hamas" due to its failure to comply with hostage release demands. Meanwhile, Hamas accused Israel of unilaterally abandoning the ceasefire, warning that the offensive jeopardizes the lives of the 59 remaining hostages in Gaza.
International reactions have been mixed. The White House confirmed that Israel consulted with U.S. officials before carrying out the strikes. However, mediators from Egypt and Qatar, who were involved in ceasefire negotiations, have expressed concerns over the deteriorating situation. Talks in Doha aimed at extending the truce have reportedly stalled.
As violence escalates, the likelihood of a renewed ceasefire remains uncertain, leaving civilians in Gaza facing dire consequences.
