An Israeli citizen was arrested on Thursday, September 19, on charges of planning to assassinate several high-profile politicians, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Paid for Espionage

According to Israel’s domestic security agency, Shin Bet and Ziare, the suspect had been recruited by Iranian intelligence services.

Shin Bet and Israeli police stated in a joint release that the suspect had been covertly smuggled into Iran on two separate occasions.

During these trips, he was allegedly paid to carry out espionage and assassination missions targeting senior Israeli figures.

Lived in Turkey

Among those targeted were Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Gallant, and other high-ranking Israeli officials.

Authorities identified the suspect as a businessman who had previously lived in Turkey, where he maintained connections with individuals who facilitated contact between him and Iranian operatives.

The arrest comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, two regional adversaries with a long history of hostilities.

The two countries have been involved in a complex geopolitical struggle, with Iran often accused of backing militant groups and attempting to undermine Israeli security through proxy forces and covert operations.
