Russia has issued a stern warning to Israel, threatening "political consequences" if the country supplies Ukraine with the Patriot air defense system.
Precarious Position
According to Ziare The Russian envoy to the United Nations made the statement amid ongoing conflicts involving Gaza, Palestine, and Israel at the UN.
While the United States and the European Union continue to disregard Russia’s threats and persist in arming Ukraine, Israel faces a more precarious position. Russia's veto power at the UN means its decisions hold significant sway within the organization.
"Arms, regardless of who sends them to Ukraine, will ultimately be destroyed, just like other Western and American weapons. Clearly, I believe that the supply of arms by Israel to Ukraine can have certain political consequences," stated Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, as reported by G4Media.
Nebenzya's comments were in response to inquiries about Russia's stance on a potential Israeli shipment of Patriot missiles to Ukraine.
Enhanced Influence
The Russian official's threat coincided with Russia taking over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of July. This leadership position enhances Russia's influence over the Council's decisions, adding weight to Nebenzya's warning.
In a related move, Romania has responded to requests from NATO allies and will send one of its Patriot defense systems, purchased from the United States, to Ukraine.
This decision underscores the ongoing international efforts to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities against the backdrop of its conflict with Russia.
