Russia’s military losses in Ukraine have reached 900,800 personnel since launching its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, according to new figures released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on March 21.
The tally includes 1,330 Russian casualties reported in the past 24 hours alone, as intense fighting continues across multiple fronts, particularly in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine.
Casualty figures reported by Kyiv and Moscow often differ.
Heavy Equipment Losses Also Mount
In addition to the reported troop casualties, Ukrainian authorities say Russian forces have suffered extensive equipment losses:
10,394 tanks
21,589 armored fighting vehicles
24,848 artillery systems
1,324 multiple launch rocket systems
1,111 air defense systems
41,259 vehicles and fuel tanks
370 aircraft and 331 helicopters
30,080 drones
28 naval vessels and one submarine
Independent verification of these figures remains difficult.
Russia’s Defense Ministry rarely comments on troop losses and last provided official numbers early in the war, which were far lower than Western or Ukrainian estimates. Western intelligence agencies have previously noted that both sides may inflate or underreport figures for strategic or political purposes.
Still, NATO and U.S. officials have acknowledged significant Russian losses. In earlier estimates, the U.S. suggested that over 300,000 Russian troops had been killed or wounded as of late 2023.
