The United Kingdom is developing two new maritime drones, named “Wasp” and “Snapper”, to enhance Ukraine’s naval capabilities in the Black Sea, Naval Technology reported.

These unmanned maritime systems are part of a classified weapons development project, first announced by UK Secretary of State for Defense John Healey on January 28.

According to a UK parliamentary response on February 4, Defence Procurement Minister Maria Eagle confirmed that both drones were rapidly developed specifically for Ukraine’s military needs.

"The system is currently undergoing final testing, and further details will be set out in due course," Eagle stated.

How Will These Drones Help Ukraine?

Naval drones have become a key weapon in modern warfare, particularly in Ukraine’s efforts to counter Russian naval forces. These unmanned vessels are used to:

  • Strike Russian military ships in the Black Sea.

  • Target critical infrastructure, such as ports, fuel depots, and air defense systems.

  • Disrupt key Russian assets in occupied territories.

Ukraine has already successfully used sea drones to damage or destroy several Russian warships, forcing Russia to relocate parts of its Black Sea fleet.

UK’s Bigger Plans for Naval Drones

The UK Ministry of Defense has been increasing its focus on advanced maritime drones. On January 8, the ministry revealed plans for a fast, low-observable maritime drone system designed to operate both inside and outside Ukraine.

While full details on Wasp and Snapper remain classified, their rapid development suggests they could soon be deployed, further boosting Ukraine’s ability to challenge Russian dominance in the Black Sea.
