$1.28 billion pledge aims to bolster European defense support

As Ukraine continues to defend against Russian aggression, European nations are ramping up military assistance to bolster Kyiv's resilience.

Sweden has now stepped forward with its largest aid package since the start of the war, demonstrating its commitment to long-term support for Ukraine and urging other allies to do the same.

Sweden has announced its most extensive military aid package for Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

The Swedish government pledged 13.5 billion kronor (approximately €1.18 billion or $1.28 billion) to support Ukraine's defense efforts.

As reported by HotNews.ro, the package aims not only to help Ukraine but also to signal to other European allies the need to take greater responsibility in supporting Kyiv.

"This is a strong message to Ukraine and its people that Sweden stands ready to provide long-term support," said Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson during a press conference.

"It is also a signal to our allies: Europe must prepare to take on a larger share of the responsibility for supporting Ukraine."

Breakdown of the Military Aid Package

The aid package allocates €515 million to purchasing equipment from Swedish and foreign defense industries for Ukraine.

Additionally, €87 million is earmarked for Ukrainian production of long-range missiles and drones.

Sweden’s armed forces will also contribute €290 million worth of donations, including 16 CB90-class combat boats—doubling the number previously sent to Ukraine.

Since 2022, Sweden's military support to Ukraine has reached a total of €5.45 billion.

The country has already supplied critical defense assets such as the Archer artillery system, 50 CV90 combat vehicles, Leopard 2 tanks, and multiple air defense systems.

Reinforcing Ukraine Amid Challenges

The announcement comes as Ukrainian forces face significant pressure on the frontlines. Despite some territorial gains in Russia’s Kursk region, Ukraine has been in a defensive position in eastern and northeastern areas for over a year.

The uncertainty surrounding future U.S. support—heightened by political shifts like the potential return of Donald Trump to the White House—has further underscored Europe's need to strengthen its own military assistance programs.

Sweden’s latest aid package reflects a growing acknowledgment among European nations of the need for sustained, independent support for Ukraine’s long-term defense against Russian aggression.
