Recent satellite images confirm that North Korea is actively working on converting its Ilyushin Il-76 transport planes into AWACS (Airborne Early Warning and Control) aircraft.

A Substantial Improvement

According to Tech this development marks a significant enhancement of the North Korean military’s capabilities.

Currently, North Korea lacks AWACS aircraft, which are crucial for advanced reconnaissance and early warning. These aircraft provide a substantial improvement over ground-based radar systems by offering a broader and more precise view of the airspace.

Initial reports of North Korea’s AWACS development surfaced in November 2023. Updated satellite images from July 15, 2024, reveal ongoing modifications at an airport in Pyongyang, confirming that the project is in progress.

Originally Produced in Russia

North Korea is utilizing its three Il-76 transport aircraft, which were originally produced in Russia.

This move is not surprising given the recent strengthening of ties between Pyongyang and Moscow. However, analysts are uncertain whether Russian or possibly Chinese experts are assisting with the modifications.

The choice of using the Il-76 for the AWACS upgrade aligns with a precedent set by Russia, which has successfully adapted the Il-76 into AWACS platforms such as the A-50 "Shmel" and the upgraded A-50U.

These Russian aircraft are known as the "eyes of Russian aviation," highlighting their advanced surveillance capabilities.
