Recent reports from Ukrainian media indicate that North Korea has significantly increased its production of weapons for Russia, focusing particularly on 152mm artillery shells.

According to Tech this development comes after Kim Jong Un's visit to Russia in September 2023, which marked a notable intensification of military support from Pyongyang to Moscow. In return, North Korea hopes to secure resources to further its nuclear and missile programs.

Increased Production of 152mm Shells

According to Defence Express, a Ukrainian military news outlet, North Korean arms factories have been retooled to prioritize the production of 152mm artillery shells. The Hyesan plant, previously manufacturing mortar shells, has shifted its focus to these artillery rounds, which are critical for Russian forces engaged in the Ukraine conflict. The plant has reportedly been granted priority access to electricity, underscoring the importance of this production effort. Raw materials for these shells are reportedly being sourced from China.

Additional North Korean Support

The 152mm shells are essential for several Russian artillery systems, including the 2S3 Akatsiya, 2S5 Giatsint, and 2S19 Msta, capable of hitting targets up to 18 to 29 kilometers away. These shells typically contain around 8 kilograms of TNT, making them a formidable component of Russia's artillery arsenal.

Beyond 152mm shells, North Korea has also been supplying Russia with 122mm rounds and KN-23 ballistic missiles. The KN-23, known for its destructive power, measures 7.5 meters in length and 0.95 meters in diameter, with a range of up to 600 kilometers. These missiles were notably used in an attack on Kyiv Oblast.

Furthermore, North Korea has been assisting Russia in refurbishing old tanks like the T-62M and T-55, providing necessary parts for modernization.
