This development underscores the growing challenges faced by Russia and its allies as Ukraine continues to mount resistance in strategically important areas.

The suspension of operations has drawn the attention of multiple intelligence agencies monitoring the war’s evolving dynamics.

According to HotNews.ro, South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) confirmed that North Korean forces have not engaged in fighting since mid-January.

Ukrainian authorities previously reported that the troops were withdrawn following heavy casualties.

Heavy Losses and Strategic Shifts

The NIS suggested that significant troop losses could be a primary reason for the cessation of combat activity.

Earlier estimates indicated that over 10,000 North Korean soldiers had been deployed to reinforce Russian defenses in the southwestern Kursk region. Ukraine had launched a surprise cross-border offensive there in August.

Despite these reinforcements, Ukrainian forces continue to hold parts of Russian territory in the region.

Kyiv has also claimed that several North Korean soldiers were captured or killed during engagements near Kursk.

Last month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky released footage purporting to show captured North Korean prisoners of war.

Uncertainty Over Future Deployment

While neither Pyongyang nor Moscow has officially confirmed the deployment of North Korean troops, intelligence reports suggest that North Korea may be preparing to rotate or send additional soldiers to support Russia’s war efforts.

In December, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff indicated that Pyongyang was taking steps to reinforce its contingent in Russia.

For now, the suspension of North Korean combat operations in Kursk raises questions about how Russia will adapt its defensive strategy in the region, particularly as Ukrainian forces continue to exert pressure on multiple fronts.
