Orban Slams Zelensky's War Proposal, Calls for EU Peace Strategy

Trending Now

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's victory plan as "more than terrifying" in an Oct. 17 social media post.

Zelensky had presented the five-point plan to the European Council in Brussels a day after revealing it to Ukraine’s parliament, the Kyiv Independent reports.

Orban, speaking before the EU summit, called for a shift in the EU's approach to the war in Ukraine, urging a ceasefire and peace talks instead of continued military support.

Under his leadership, Hungary has repeatedly blocked aid to Kyiv and advocated for negotiations with Moscow, often echoing Kremlin viewpoints.

Orban condemned Zelensky's plan, which seeks NATO membership for Ukraine, non-nuclear deterrence against Russia, and post-war security arrangements.

He deemed it "dangerous," particularly in its call for more long-range weapons to target Russian forces.

The Hungarian leader insisted that Ukraine is losing the war and urged the European Union to adopt a "peace strategy."

He also called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron to begin negotiations with Russia on behalf of the EU to resolve the conflict.

Orban's stance aligns with his broader efforts to position Hungary as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia, in contrast to the EU's continued military support for Kyiv.
