Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning to the United States and Germany regarding the potential deployment of American long-range missiles in Germany.
Will Deploy Missiles in Return
Speaking at the main naval parade on Navy Day in St. Petersburg, Putin declared that such a move would prompt Russia to abandon its self-imposed moratorium on the deployment of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles (RSMDs).
According to Tass Putin emphasized that the presence of U.S. missiles in Germany would bring significant Russian state and military infrastructure within striking range, with a flight time to targets on Russian territory reduced to approximately ten minutes.
He stated, "In such a case, we will consider ourselves free from our unilateral commitment to refrain from deploying medium and shorter-range missiles."
Plans to Deploy Missiles
The Russian President's remarks come in response to recent statements from the U.S. administration and the German government about plans to deploy high-precision, long-range missile systems on German soil by 2026.
Putin highlighted the potential threat these missiles pose, including the possibility of them being equipped with nuclear warheads in the future.
This development has sparked concern and criticism from Russian officials. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for the completion of the Special Military Operation (SVO) to avoid the deployment of U.S. missiles.
Additionally, Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Russian Federation Council, stated that Germany does not have the right to host U.S. missiles. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov further warned that such plans would be a significant step towards a new Cold War.
