Russian President Vladimir Putin has entrusted Aleksei Dyumin, one of his most loyal allies, with overseeing military operations in the Kursk region.

A Former Bodyguard

Dyumin, a former bodyguard and rising figure in Russia's security apparatus, has a long history with Putin, dating back to the 1990s, according to Ziare.

Dyumin's military and political career has seen a rapid ascent over the past decade. He played a pivotal role in the 2014 annexation of Crimea and was instrumental in evacuating the pro-Russian Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych during the height of Ukraine's political crisis.

Following these actions, he held senior positions within Russia's military intelligence and later served as Deputy Defense Minister.

Determination to Maintain Control

In 2016, Dyumin was appointed governor of the Tula region, known for its weapons manufacturing, positioning him as a key player within Putin's inner circle. His close relationship with Putin has often fueled speculation that he might be a potential successor.

By placing Dyumin in charge of operations in the Kursk region, Putin is sending a clear message about his determination to maintain control. This move comes as Ukrainian forces continue to press their surprise attacks on Russian territory, raising concerns about the stability of Russia's border regions.

Dyumin’s appointment is not just about military strategy; it also solidifies his standing as one of the Kremlin’s most powerful figures. However, his future may depend on how effectively he can manage the ongoing conflict, as prolonged Ukrainian incursions could undermine his rising influence.
