The Russian defense industry has recently showcased its ability to repair a heavily damaged T-90M tank, sparking significant discussion among military analysts.

Often Dismantled Instead of Repaired

The T-90M, a sophisticated model introduced into service in 2021 and hailed by President Vladimir Putin as the "pride of Russia," was reportedly hit 26 times by Ukrainian drones before being sent to Uralwagonzavod in Nizhny Tagil for repairs.

According to Russian sources and WP, the tank was restored to operational status in just four weeks. However, Ukrainian military analysts argue that this achievement shows Russia's mounting problems rather than its prowess.

The analysts, speaking to Defence Express, suggest that such extensive repairs were previously uncommon. Tanks sustaining similar damage would often be dismantled for parts rather than repaired, pointing to potential shortages in Russia’s ability to replace its lost equipment.

A Shortage in Suitable Equipment

The T-90M Proryv is an advanced variant of the T-90 series, featuring a 125 mm 2A46M-5 gun and advanced fire control systems. Despite its technological enhancements, Ukrainian experts have criticized it as a "failure rather than a breakthrough," citing vulnerabilities that are exploited by drone attacks.

The recent repair incident underscores broader issues within Russia's defense industry. For instance, the deployment of T-90S tanks — intended for export rather than domestic use — suggests a shortage of suitable equipment for the Russian military.

This reflects the challenges faced by Russia as it continues to sustain significant losses in Ukraine.
