Russian drone strikes targeted a hospital in Sumy, a northeastern city in Ukraine, killing nine people, including a nurse and a police officer.

122 People Evacuated From Building

Ukrainian officials reported that the hospital was struck twice on Saturday morning, first during a routine day and then again while rescue operations were underway. The attacks left at least 12 others injured, with multiple floors of the hospital severely damaged and a fire erupting as a result.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) confirmed that 122 people were evacuated from the building after the assault.

Sumy, located approximately 30 kilometers (about 18.6 miles) from the Russian border, has faced near-daily attacks from Russian forces in recent weeks. The two drone strikes significantly escalated concerns for the safety of medical facilities and civilians in the region.

Worked Quickly to Contain Fire

Emergency responders worked quickly to contain the fire caused by the drone attacks, which partially destroyed three floors and the roof of the four-story hospital.

Nearby residential buildings also suffered damage during the assault, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attacks that have plagued Sumy.

In its latest operational update, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its forces targeted several Ukrainian brigades in the Sumy region.

This assertion, however, comes amid growing international condemnation of the attacks, which have increasingly threatened civilian life and infrastructure in Ukraine.
